Born from a guitarist in a major ’70s band seeking a unique, more “engineered” tone, the original hardware became a cult classic across the late ’80s and ’90s – shaping countless programmed, studio-driven guitar sounds on hit records.

The HWS-100AS faithfully recreates that rare tone architecture in a compact, simplified single-channel pedal designed for modern rigs, while retaining the feel, dynamics and musical compression that made the original so iconic.

Architecture: Multi-Stage Signal Path

Buffer ⇒ Compressor ⇒ Pre-Gain ⇒ Phase ⇒ Cab Sim ⇒ Output Stage (Treble Boost)

The incoming signal is buffered, dynamically compressed, split into clean/drive paths, filtered, then finalised with output gain and a high-frequency boost.

The output stage is designed to accommodate a wide range of amps, interfaces and pedals.

 

Modes & Channel Behaviour

Unlike the original multi-channel rack unit, the HWS-100AS condenses its core functionality into a single pedal with a simple channel switching layout.

Clean Channel

  • CLN2 – Direct tone from compressor (no cab sim)

  • CLN – Clean tone with amp-like gain and cab sim

  • SEMI – Slightly pushed clean

 

Drive Channel

  • EDGE – Lower perceived gain, filtered drive

  • DIST – Higher gain, saturated drive

 

Switching is handled via dedicated footswitches, allowing quick transitions between clean and driven textures.

 

Phase Function

A subtle and musical phase-shift effect available in all modes, designed to introduce tonal depth and movement rather than extreme modulation.

Easily toggled via footswitch with visual LED confirmation.

 

Cabinet Simulation

Integrated, active low-pass filter based on the original hardware.

Bypassed only in CLN2 mode for a raw, open sound.

 

Output Stage

  • Level Control – Adjusts unity gain of the output stage

  • Treble-Boost – High-frequency boost to enhance presence and clarity

Both controls work together, allowing fine tuning for different amps, interfaces or backline environments.
