As the next entry in Strymon’s ongoing series of delay-focused stompboxes, the Olivera oil can echo pedal masterfully captures the ethos of old-school space sculpting from the Tel-Rey days of uncharted audio-effects territory. Unrelenting research and development from the Strymon team gave way to an all-new, cutting-edge algorithm that emulates the unpredictable, dark, and prismatic predecessors. This out-of-time powerhouse bridges the legendary oil-can delay with the malleable musicality modern guitarists need, across the onboard USB-C support, DAW compatibility, dual-purpose Expression and MIDI input, selectable mono-stereo operation, and — of course, as Strymon’s secret weapon — the Class A JFET preamp input. Dark repeats, 300 presets, time-warping wizardry, raucously reverberating regeneration, and monstrous modulation are only the beginning with the Strymon Olivera oil can echo pedal.

Vintage character, modern musicality, endless potential

Classic oil-can echoes relied on using a small, rotating can of conductive fluid, resulting in dark, thick, and dynamic repeats, teeming with character and a touch of perfectly imperfect instability. And because Strymon spared no effort to emulate the originary echo elements with exacting accuracy, the Heads Control knob lets you bounce between two simulated playback heads. In the midcentury effects units, these defined the decay of your echo, and the Olivera allows you to select not only each, but also both, in addition to modern-engineered Time controls that span 200–800ms. The interplay of these parameters lets you conjure evocative temporal-tampering effects, from lush and lopsided to complex and cavernous. Moreover, the Intensity control’s modulation, alongside the Regeneration knob’s ability to attenuate how many echo repeats are reprocessed, brings everything together into a voltaic vortex of multidimensional musicality, effortlessly managed and endlessly expressive.

Serious sonic contouring in any setup

Because the Olivera pedal was designed to independently process its left- and right-channel signals, the mono-stereo malleability with which Strymon endowed this pedal is a game-changer for virtually every pedalboard. What’s more, the ultra-low-noise processing of the JFET input gives you an immense dynamic range that captures the dimensional depth of your every performance flourish. The ability to choose between Strymon’s premium buffered bypass and the electromechanical relay-switched bypass means every carefully chosen option for maximum signal preservation is supported with equal aplomb. Of course, standard pedalboards don’t hoard the fun. A 1/4-inch TRS input pulls double duty on Expression and MIDI-control capabilities, and the USB-C port expands your locus of control to include nearly any DAW-fueled arrangement, including both full control from your USB-connected device and comprehensive management of all 300 onboard presets, as well as your own carefully crafted patches!
