The Electronic Audio Experiments Halberd is a discrete transistor overdrive designed for exceptional dynamic range, note clarity and touch response. Sitting in the medium-gain territory while delivering the harmonic richness and grind of a much heavier drive, the Halberd offers a distinctive alternative to traditional op-amp distortion and smooth amp-style overdrives.
Its unique transistor architecture gives the Halberd a character somewhere between an overdriven vintage tweed amp and an overloaded recording console. Rather than aiming for complete transparency, it interacts with your instrument and amplifier while adding its own harmonic texture, compression and edge. It works equally well with guitar, bass and synthesizer.
The Pre control determines overall gain, moving from lightly compressed drive into increasingly saturated clipping and fuzzy overdrive. Depth acts as an adjustable low-frequency shelving filter at the input and interacts directly with the Pre control, effectively working as a separate gain control for the low frequencies. Tone provides a high-frequency shelving cut at the output, while Post controls the final output level.
A three-position Voice switch dramatically changes the response of the drive circuit. Clang emphasises upper-mid gain for a sharper attack and aggressive character, Standard provides moderate gain with a gentle mid push, while Deep delivers a full-range gain boost with woollier saturation and a fuzzier attack.
