The vivid tones of your favorite recordings can be a challenge to replicate live. Sculpted studio tracks owe a good chunk of their essence to outboard compressors — rackmounted units that typically carry hefty price tags. The boutique builders at Origin Effects place comparable studio-grade compression at your feet with the pedalboard-friendly Cali76 FET compressor pedal! Based on an iconic FET compressor and freshly re-tooled for greater headroom, the Cali76 offers six wide-ranging parameters and an infinite array of compression styles. Slow attack and fast release settings will gently corral guitar dynamics. Diming the ratio can usher in top-end spank; reversing the attack and release unleashes rounded tones with miles of sustain — perfect for driven power chords and emotive leads. The Dry blend control lets you fold compression into uncompressed signals for studio-grade body that doesn’t cost you a lick of dynamics or treble detail. Moreover, a new front-facing LED meter provides monitoring for the compressor’s performance, even on dark stages, while headroom improvements make the Cali76 FET perfect for active pickups and line-level sources. Of course, it’s all built by hand and housed in Origin Effects’ brushed stainless-steel enclosure for rugged durability!

The epitome of utility

The Cali76 compressor pedal is riddled with upgrades and improvements. The differences preserve earlier versions’ all-analog signal path while demonstrating Origin Effects’ lasting commitment to player satisfaction.

  • Smaller enclosure saves pedalboard real estate — while adding a 10-LED meter for visual monitoring
  • Updated power supply converts incoming 9V power internally to 24V — a significant spike in headroom that empowers players to utilize active pickups and line-level sources
  • Signal path improvements align performance with previous “large-format” Cali76 units
  • Studio-grade FET compressor in a pedal format
  • All-analog signal path based on a quintessential studio compressor/limiter
  • Optimized for electric guitar with ultra-high impedance jacks
  • Detailed control parameters fuel infinite utility and tonal range
  • Dry blend control lets users employ parallel compression — a classic studio trick
  • Use it to gently control dynamics, dial up long liquid sustain, or craft a range of tones in between
  • Durable hand-polished stainless-steel enclosure
  • Assembled by hand and individually inspected
  • New 10-LED meter graph for monitoring, plus performance and headroom upgrades
  • Also suitable for active pickups and line-level signals

Cali76 FET…Pro Grade Utility and Colour,

I am using the Origin Effects | Cali76 FET Compressor for the melody side of my Warr guitar, a touch style instrument. It can get very 80’s LA studio rack sounding very easy if that is what you want. It took me some dealing in to get what I needed but once dialled in, its really great.
My Settings:
Ratio 4:1
Attack 800ms (Slowest)
Release about 100ms (fast)
Mix 90% wet
Sounds beautiful, brings out incredible note clarity and is an awesome alongside the CBA Condor HiFi in helping the Meris ENZO X with its tracking.
I am happy with my purchase and have a tool that can do a multitude of things.
If you want a transparent compressor I would look elsewhere. If you want colour and 80’s rack vibes this is a stellar choice.
