What is NAM?

NAM stands for Neural Amp Modeler: an open-source project created by Steven Atkinson to capture the input-to-output behaviour of guitar and bass equipment with trained neural networks.

A NAM capture can represent a guitar amp, bass amp, preamp, distortion pedal, compressor, EQ or a complete signal chain. The trainer plays a known signal through the target gear, compares the recorded result and learns how that particular setup responded. The resulting .nam file is a learned snapshot of the gear at the captured settings, not a conventional component-by-component circuit model.

NAM is a format and modelling technology, not a single pedal. It is not owned as a closed product ecosystem by one pedal manufacturer. Compatible developers can build NAM playback into software or hardware, and the same model file can move between hosts that support its architecture.

TONE3000 has become a major discovery, training and distribution platform for NAM models. That convenience does not remove the variables that affect results: capture calibration, training data, the chosen architecture, playback input level, cabinet treatment and the quality of the audio path all matter.

Open model files

A compatible .nam file can move between supported apps, plug-ins and hardware instead of remaining locked to one manufacturer’s cloud.

Snapshot behaviour

A capture learns one gear setup. It does not automatically recreate every knob position or replace a fully parameterised circuit model.

Many possible hosts

NAM can run in dedicated pedals, multi-effects units, practice amps, phones, tablets, computers and third-party plug-in hosts.

You no longer need a dedicated modelling pedal to use professional-quality neural amp captures. An iPhone, iPad, Mac, Windows computer or Linux system can become the host. The exact sound, latency and feature set still depend on the app, audio interface, operating system and implementation.

From A1 to A2: the architecture change

A2 is a new NAM architecture, not a cosmetic file update. Software and hardware that load A1 models need a compatible core or firmware update before they can play A2 natively.

A1 generation Standard → Nano

Separate Standard, Lite, Feather and Nano model sizes traded processing demand against network capacity. A creator generally trained and distributed a particular size.

A2 generation Full ↔ Lite

One slimmable A2 model can operate at Full or Lite width in a compatible host. The device or app selects the runtime according to available processing power.

A1: multiple model sizes

A1 Standard offered the greatest modelling capacity in the original family. A1 Lite, Feather and Nano reduced the computational load for increasingly constrained systems, with a corresponding reduction in capacity. These A1 formats remain useful and widely available. An A1-capable product does not, however, support A2 merely because both use the NAM name.

A2 Full and A2 Lite

A2 Full is the maximum-width playback mode for software and hardware with suitable processing headroom. A2 Lite runs the same trained A2 model at a narrower width for compact or cost-sensitive devices. This shared architecture is important: a creator does not need to maintain a separate A2 Lite capture catalogue.

Native support vs conversion Native support means the device or app directly loads and runs the NAM architecture. Conversion or distillation means a NAM file is transformed into a different, usually proprietary model before playback. A product that can import a NAM file is not necessarily running NAM natively.

A2 Full led TONE3000’s blind listening comparison

TONE3000 reports that more than 1,000 participants compared anonymised recordings of real gear and digital models using a MUSHRA listening test. In its published mean-score view, A2 Full scored 92.4, the highest result among the tested digital modelers. The recorded reference scored 97.5 and is not a modeler.

NAM and amp modelling evolution

NAM A2 belongs to a longer shift from fixed digital amp models toward profiling, neural capture and increasingly portable model files.

  1. 1998 Line 6 POD The original red POD helped make direct digital amp modelling mainstream for recording and live use.
  2. 2011 Kemper PROFILER Profiling shifted attention from a fixed model list to capturing the sound of a specific amplifier setup.
  3. 2021 Quad Cortex ships Neural Capture arrived inside a touchscreen floorboard with integrated effects, routing and cloud sharing.
  4. 2022–2023 TONEX software and pedal IK released TONEX software in 2022 and followed with dedicated pedal hardware in 2023.
  5. 2023 onward Open NAM adoption Open-source NAM playback and community model sharing expanded across plug-ins and third-party projects.
  6. A1 generation Standard to Nano Multiple network sizes opened a path from desktop playback toward embedded hardware.
  7. 2 June 2026 NAM A2 released A2 became NAM’s new standard architecture, with one model able to run in Full or Lite form.
  8. 2026 Native embedded support grows A2 Lite targets constrained devices while A2 Full reaches higher-power software and stage hardware.

This is a broad technology overview, not a claim that each system follows the same technical chain. Fractal, for example, is primarily associated with component-level algorithmic modelling and a separate Tone Match process.

Run NAM on an iPhone, iPad or laptop

You do not need a dedicated NAM pedal. Your iPhone, iPad or laptop can now function as the amp modeller.

To run NAM, you only need three things:

A host device and app

The phone, tablet or computer runs a NAM-compatible standalone app or plug-in and loads the model file.

An audio interface

The interface converts the guitar signal to digital audio and returns the processed sound to headphones or outputs. A Hi-Z input is a useful interface specification, not a separate device.

An output system

Use headphones, powered studio monitors, a powered FRFR speaker, mixer, PA or another correctly routed amplification system.

That is the complete NAM rig.

Headphones

Connect them to the interface, not the phone or tablet speaker. Turn direct monitoring off if you hear the clean guitar mixed with the processed tone.

Powered monitors or PA

Use a full-rig capture or add an appropriate cabinet IR after an amp-only model. Send the interface line outputs to powered speakers or a mixer.

Powered FRFR, mixer or IEM

Treat these as full-range destinations. Keep cabinet simulation in the chain when the capture or routing requires it.

Real guitar amp

For an effects return or power-amp input feeding a real guitar speaker, use an amp-only model and normally disable the cabinet IR. Start at a very low output level.

Why use a dedicated pedal?

Pedals still offer footswitches, secure audio connections, predictable power, stage durability and a simpler live setup. They are convenient, not mandatory.

Gain staging

Avoid clipping the interface input. A model can feel wrong when it receives a signal that is much hotter or quieter than the level expected by the capture.

Common mistakes

  • Using a playback-only USB adapter instead of an audio interface
  • Monitoring through the phone or tablet speaker
  • Doubling a cab-included capture with another cabinet IR
  • Sending cabinet simulation into a real guitar speaker
  • Hearing clean direct monitoring with the processed tone
  • Input clipping or an unstable, excessively small buffer
  • Under-powering the interface or leaving USB cables unsecured on stage
Practical latency starting point On a computer, start with a 64- or 128-sample buffer. Increase it if you hear clicks or dropouts. Exact latency depends on the device, operating system, interface, sample rate, buffer and app, so one millisecond figure cannot describe every rig.

Connection notes by device

USB-C iPhone

Connect a class-compliant interface directly by USB-C. Some interfaces need a powered hub for reliable operation or charging.

Lightning iPhone

Use an Apple Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter or a dedicated Lightning-compatible interface. External power may be required.

USB-C iPad

Direct connection is simple. A powered USB-C hub is useful when charging, MIDI and audio must operate at the same time.

Mac

Use Core Audio with Gateway or another compatible standalone host or plug-in. A DAW is useful for recording and more complex routing.

Windows

Use the interface manufacturer’s ASIO driver where available. Generic high-latency drivers are a poor choice for live guitar monitoring.

NAM apps for mobile and desktop

The host determines where a model can run, whether it works as a standalone rig or plug-in, and whether A2 is supported directly.

App compatibility changes quickly. “NAM compatible” does not automatically mean “NAM A2 compatible”. The A2 column below is marked as verified only when a current official project page, release note or App Store listing explicitly confirms it.

Recommended mobile NAM setups

A class-compliant, USB-C bus-powered interface with one or two inputs is usually the most practical front end for a portable NAM rig.

Compact one-instrument rigs

For the smallest phone or tablet setup, consider the IK Multimedia iRig USB, higher-spec iRig HD X or bus-powered Zoom AMS-22. Connect the instrument, run the NAM app and monitor from the interface.

Portable two-channel rigs

The Blackstar Polar Go, Zoom AMS-24 and Audient EVO 4 are useful when a second input, microphone or more flexible monitoring is required.

Instrument-focused home studio

For a Mac or Windows recording setup, compare the IK Multimedia AXE I/O Solo, Lewitt CONNECT 2 and Solid State Logic SSL 1. Each provides a more conventional desktop interface workflow for NAM plug-ins, recording and monitor connection.

More inputs when the rig expands

The bus-powered Zoom AMS-44 adds four-in/four-out connectivity for a larger portable setup. That extra I/O is unnecessary for a simple guitar-to-NAM rig, but useful when adding vocals, stereo sources or more complex routing.

Simple selection rule For most guitar or bass NAM rigs, a class-compliant USB-C bus-powered interface with one or two inputs is ideal. Choose more I/O only when the wider recording or live setup genuinely needs it, and confirm power requirements and mobile compatibility for the exact host device.

NAM is open and portable

The model format can move between compatible hosts, but implementation quality and architecture support still matter.

A2 is a real architecture change

A2 Full and Lite are two widths of one A2 model. A1 support alone does not guarantee native A2 playback.

The host can be in your pocket

A phone, tablet or laptop, a suitable audio interface and an output system form a complete NAM rig.

NAM A2 hardware support tracker

This database separates hardware you can use now from promised updates, converted imports and products that use a different capture system.

Status was rechecked against manufacturer pages, firmware notes and TONE3000 partner announcements on 29 July 2026. A manufacturer partnership is useful evidence of direction, but it is not the same as a downloadable firmware release for a specific product.

Released native The original A2 model runs on the device without conversion to another format.
Announced The company has committed to support, but the matching public firmware is not yet verified.
Converted A NAM file is transformed or distilled into a proprietary device format before playback.
Not NAM The product may clone or profile gear, but it does not currently load native NAM files.
Check the status, not only the NAM logo. “NAM compatible” can mean native A2, legacy A1, a converted proprietary file or a future update. Those are materially different buying propositions.

What the main hardware updates actually mean

Darkglass Anagram: Full and Lite on one stage processor

The Darkglass Anagram is the clearest high-end example in the current GSUS4 range. KosmOS 1.16 adds A2 model loading and lets the user choose Full or Lite inside the loader block. It also retains legacy A1 support. Training or creating the model still happens elsewhere; Anagram is the stage playback and effects host.

Hotone: Stage now, Ampero II and Stomp later

The Ampero II Stage now runs A2 Lite natively through firmware V1.7.0, with Ampero II Software V1.5.1 or Ampero II Stage Mobile V1.2.2 handling the import workflow. The Ampero II and Ampero II Stomp are scheduled to receive A2 Lite in later updates. Until their own firmware is released, they belong in the announced column.

Blackstar: A2 Lite in a mini amp and a headphone amp

The Beam Mini launched with native embedded A2 support and direct TONE3000 access through the Beam app. Early material used the name A2-Nano; TONE3000 later standardised that embedded runtime name as A2 Lite. The Beam Solo received native A2 Lite through a free firmware update, bringing the same open capture workflow to a headphone-format practice device.

NUX MG-30: native A2 Lite through the Gen2 NAM Loader

The NUX MG-30 can now run compatible A2 Lite models through its Gen2 firmware path. The matching Gen2 QuickTone editor provides ten NAM locations inside the AMP block. Back up presets first and use firmware that matches the unit’s language version; NUX warns that the English and Mandarin firmware packages are not interchangeable.

MOOER GE1000: conversion is no longer required for A2 Lite

MOOER’s GE1000 and GE1000 Li received native A2 Lite loading in firmware V3.1.0. This is an important distinction from the earlier V3.0.8 workflow, which could import NAM files only through an external converter. The current V3.1.1 editor update further optimises A2 Lite loading performance and imported-model volume balance.

XRecer XR1: native A2 Full in a pre-release platform

The XRecer XR1 is being developed with native A2 Full and Lite playback as part of its high-powered multi-effects architecture. It belongs in the unified tracker because A2 Full support is a stated platform feature, but it is not marked released: XRecer has not yet presented the XR1 as a generally available production product, so final OS behaviour and the shipping import workflow still need confirmation.

Sonicake Pocket Master: useful NAM access, but A1 conversion

The compact Sonicake Pocket Master can import legacy A1 material through Sonicake’s conversion or distillation workflow. It should not be described as a native A2 or A2 Lite device. When sourcing a model from TONE3000 for this unit, choose the legacy A1 version and follow Sonicake’s current manager-software instructions.

Which hardware route makes sense?

A2 Full in a stage processor

Choose the Darkglass Anagram when A2 Full, flexible routing and a bass-focused professional effects environment are the priority.

All-in-one guitar multi-effects

Choose the Hotone Ampero II Stage when you want released A2 Lite inside a touchscreen floor processor with footswitches and conventional live I/O.

More released A2 Lite multi-effects

The NUX MG-30 adds A2 Lite through its Gen2 NAM Loader, while the MOOER GE1000 loads A2 Lite natively from firmware V3.1.0 with current editor refinements.

Pre-release A2 Full workstation

The XRecer XR1 is an announced native A2 Full and Lite platform, not a currently verified retail choice. Recheck the shipping OS and availability before comparing it with released hardware.

Portable speaker practice

Choose the Blackstar Beam Mini for a self-contained rechargeable amp with native A2 Lite and direct TONE3000 browsing.

Headphone practice

Choose the Blackstar Beam Solo when compact headphone use matters more than stage foot control.

Low-cost legacy NAM access

The Sonicake Pocket Master can be useful if legacy A1 conversion is acceptable. Do not buy it expecting native A2 playback.

Waiting for HeadRush

The HeadRush Prime, HeadRush Core and HeadRush Flex Prime remain relevant all-in-one processors, but buy for their current features unless model-specific NAM firmware has appeared.

Buying specifically for NAM A2? Choose a product marked released and native in the tracker. If the feature is announced, ask GSUS4 to confirm the exact firmware version before ordering.

NAM A2 versus the major modeller ecosystems

NAM A2 is not automatically the best answer for every player. Its defining advantage is an open, portable model format. The established commercial platforms often answer a different question: how much capture creation, signal routing, effects and stage control can one integrated system provide?

A compatible A2 model can move between computer software and native third-party hardware without being tied to one modeller brand. The host still determines routing, effects, latency and how many models can run at once.

Integrated systems

Capture and playback together

Quad Cortex, Kemper and HeadRush are designed around a manufacturer-controlled workflow. That can be more convenient when creating captures and managing complete live rigs, even though the resulting files stay inside that ecosystem.

Traditional modelling

Controls that behave like an amp

Fractal and other component-modelled platforms prioritise adjustable virtual circuits, deep effects and routing. A static capture can be extremely accurate at its trained setting, but it does not automatically recreate every position of the original amp controls.

“Proprietary” is not a criticism of sound quality. It describes who controls the file format and compatible playback devices. “Open” does not guarantee that every host supports every NAM capacity or offers the same performance.

The practical differences behind the table

NAM A2 versus Quad Cortex

Quad Cortex is the more integrated capture appliance. Neural Capture V2 is created with Quad Cortex and Cortex Control, then managed through the Cortex account and cloud ecosystem. NAM separates the model from the playback box: creation normally happens on a computer or service, while a growing range of third-party hosts can load the result. Choose Quad Cortex for a tightly coordinated capture-to-stage workflow; choose NAM when model portability and host choice matter more.

Darkglass Anagram is a NAM host, not a competing format

The Darkglass Anagram belongs on both sides of this discussion. Its KosmOS effects, touchscreen workflow and presets are part of the Darkglass platform, while its Neural Loader runs open NAM files. It therefore combines an integrated stage processor with A2 Full and Lite playback rather than replacing NAM with a proprietary capture type.

NAM A2 versus TONEX

Both systems use machine learning to recreate a recorded gear state, but their ecosystems are different. NAM publishes an open model format and is appearing in independent software and hardware. TONEX uses IK’s proprietary Tone Model format across its own software, mobile and pedal products. TONEX can feel more unified if you want one vendor’s library and hardware workflow; NAM is more attractive when the same model should move between unrelated hosts.

NAM A2 versus Kemper

Kemper remains a mature profiling and live-performance platform, with dedicated hardware, Rig Manager, foot control and a large established profile library. NAM can be much less expensive on a laptop or mobile device and offers an open path into third-party hardware. The choice is less about which can sound “real” and more about whether you want a complete long-running stage ecosystem or an open model that can follow you between hosts.

NAM A2 versus Fractal Audio

Fractal’s main strength is deep editable modelling: amp parameters, cabinet behaviour, effects and routing can be treated as a complete programmable rig. Axe-Fx III Tone Match shapes an existing preset toward a reference and can export the result as a User Cab IR, but it is not the same workflow as loading an open neural amp snapshot. Choose Fractal when detailed control and effects architecture are the priority; choose NAM when a particular captured setting and cross-host portability are the priority.

NAM A2 versus HeadRush

HeadRush currently offers its own Amp Cloner and SuperClone workflow alongside touchscreen rig building. Those clones are not NAM files. Native A2 support has been announced for HeadRush Prime, HeadRush Core and HeadRush Flex Prime, which would let the same hardware run both HeadRush’s proprietary clones and open NAM models. Until that firmware is publicly listed, treat NAM as a future feature rather than a current purchase guarantee.

The shortest buying rule: choose NAM for open model portability, an integrated capture platform for capture-to-stage convenience, or a component modeller for maximum parameter control. Sound quality depends on the individual model, capture conditions, input level, cabinet path and playback system—not the logo alone.

Which ecosystem is right for you?

You already have an interface and computer

Start with NAM software. It is the lowest-risk way to learn about input level, model choice and cabinet routing before buying a dedicated host.

You want to capture your own gear in one box

Quad Cortex, Kemper or a compatible HeadRush unit offers a more integrated creation workflow. Compare the exact capture process, foot control and I/O—not only the headline technology.

You want open A2 on stage now

Use a released native host such as the Darkglass Anagram, Hotone Ampero II Stage, NUX MG-30, MOOER GE1000, Blackstar Beam Mini or Beam Solo, matched to the way you actually play.

You want maximum virtual-amp editing

A component-modelled platform such as Fractal is usually the stronger fit when power-amp behaviour, advanced routing and a large effects environment matter more than moving one capture between brands.

You want the simplest mobile practice rig

An iPhone or iPad, a class-compliant USB-C interface and one of the apps in Part 1 can be enough. A hardware headphone amp is simpler when you do not want adapters, app routing or notifications involved.

You are buying for an announced update

Buy only if the unit’s current features already justify the price. Announced support can move, and the exact capacity—A2 Full, Standard, Lite or Nano—affects both compatibility and processing load.

NAM A2 roadmap: what is confirmed and what is still a watch item

The important 2026 change is not one more plug-in. It is the separation of a neural amp model from a single hardware brand. The confirmed releases in Part 2 prove that open A2 playback can scale from a computer down to embedded practice products.

GSUS4 view, clearly labelled as an inference: if more manufacturers implement the same open model format, players should be able to keep a favourite capture while changing the hardware around it. That could make the quality of a host’s converters, routing, effects, foot control and support more important than ownership of a closed capture library. Adoption is already real, but a universal cross-device standard is not guaranteed.

Extended NAM A2 FAQ

These answers separate model quality, file compatibility and the features of the device that plays the model.

Does A2 Full always sound better than A2 Lite?

No. Full has more model capacity, but the source capture, training data, gain range and playback setup still matter. A strong Lite model can be more useful than a poorly trained Full model. Full also requires more processing power.

Can an A1-only pedal load an A2 file automatically?

No. The playback engine must implement the A2 architecture and the capacity used by the file. A conversion or distillation service may create a legacy A1 version, but that new file is not native A2.

Do existing A1 models need to be retrained?

Not if you are happy with them and your host still supports A1. Retraining is required if you want a true A2 model; simply renaming or importing an A1 file does not change its architecture.

Is a converted model still native NAM?

It can still be a NAM model, but the architecture matters. An A2 model converted or distilled to A1 is a legacy A1 derivative, not native A2 playback. Product descriptions should state that distinction.

Can one NAM capture reproduce every position of an amp’s controls?

Generally no. A NAM file represents the trained behaviour around the settings used to create it. For genuinely different gain, channel or tone-control positions, use separate models or combine the capture with suitable EQ and effects.

Does a NAM file include the speaker cabinet?

It depends on the capture. A Full Rig model may include the amp, cabinet and microphone chain, while an amp-head or pedal model may need a separate cabinet IR. Check the model’s metadata and avoid accidentally running two cabinet stages.

Can an iPhone or iPad NAM rig replace a pedal live?

Yes, if the interface, power, monitoring and foot-control setup are reliable. Use a low buffer that remains stable, enable Do Not Disturb, secure every adapter and test the exact set beforehand. A dedicated pedal remains simpler to troubleshoot on stage.

Why does the same NAM model sound different on two devices?

Input calibration, analogue converters, output level, cabinet or IR choice, sample rate and monitoring all affect the result. Match input levels first, then compare the same model and cabinet path at equal listening volume.

Can current NAM hardware create its own A2 capture?

Most current native A2 devices are playback hosts rather than self-contained trainers. They load a model created elsewhere. Check the manufacturer’s workflow if on-device capture creation is essential.

Has HeadRush released NAM A2 firmware for Prime, Core and Flex Prime?

Support has been announced, but the public downloads reviewed for this guide did not yet verify a model-specific NAM release on 29 July 2026. The existing Amp Cloner and SuperClone systems are separate, proprietary HeadRush features.

Does Sonicake Pocket Master support A2 or A2 Lite?

Not natively in the workflow verified for this guide. Pocket Master uses converted or distilled legacy A1 models. Select the A1 version when downloading a compatible model.

Which Ampero II model supports NAM A2 right now?

Ampero II Stage supports native A2 Lite through its released update. Ampero II and Ampero II Stomp have been announced for later A2 Lite updates; verify their own current firmware before purchase.

Final verdict: what NAM A2 changes

NAM A2 matters because a high-quality neural model no longer has to belong to one software company or one pedal manufacturer. The same open architecture can now appear in a free desktop host, a mobile rig, a practice amp or a professional stage processor.

Start with the rig you already own

If you have a computer, headphones or monitors and an audio interface, try NAM in software before buying new hardware. That reveals whether the workflow and available models suit you.

Buy released features, not promises

When hardware is the goal, confirm the exact model, firmware and supported A2 capacity. An announcement, partnership or NAM import button is not the same as verified native playback.

Choose the complete workflow

The model is only one part of the rig. Input calibration, cabinet routing, effects, switching, physical connections, monitoring and support determine whether the system works in practice.

The best NAM rig is the simplest reliable rig that fits the way you play. That may be an iPhone and compact interface, a laptop in the studio, a small practice amp or a dedicated floor processor. A2 expands the choices; it does not make every choice identical.

I bought a Valeton GP-5 end of last year, and I’m loving it, but when NAM announced A2, I was worried that Valeton wouldn’t upgrade to the new architecture. However, I emailed them about it recently, and they told me that they can’t give me a timeline, but they’re working on it. Then they posted on Instagram stating that they’re working on NAM A2 support. This excited me as A2 Lite would be more than capable of running on the GP-5’s chip.

We’ll see what happens!
