Defender or De-Fender?
PRS & John Mayer’s New Silver Sky Has Guitar Fans Talking
Eight new colours, one very familiar name, and a guitar community that was never going to leave the spelling alone.
PRS has announced some lovely new guitar colours. Naturally, the internet has decided to investigate the name.
Announced on 22 September, the Silver Sky Defender Color Collection brings PRS, John Mayer and British 4×4 brand Defender together: four colours for the US-made Silver Sky and four for the SE. A perfectly sensible meeting of guitars and cars. [PRS announcement]
Unless you have been following Fender’s recent Stratocaster body-shape dispute. Then those last six letters start looking rather conspicuous.
We came for the colour chart. Somehow, we ended up in the comments section with a conspiracy board.
The joke is real.
The hidden message? Unconfirmed.
A 22 September Reddit r/Guitar post used “DeFender”, while users on the PRS forum connected the name with the Fender dispute. Some fans are reading it as “remove Fender” or “defeat Fender”. That is wordplay, rather than what Defender means. Here, officially, it is the vehicle brand. [Reddit] · [PRS forum]
You can see why the neck plate caught people’s attention. Turn over a Silver Sky and there is DEFENDER on the neck plate. To a car enthusiast, a handsome badge. To a guitar forum, enough material for the afternoon.
The collaboration is official, and the joke is circulating. There is no confirmed evidence that PRS or Mayer planned it as a dig at Fender.
Why the timing makes it funnier
There is genuine legal history behind the banter, but three different developments deserve to stay separate:
- 22 December 2025 judgment → 9 March 2026 announcementA Düsseldorf court issued a default judgment against a Chinese seller, prohibiting distribution of the guitars concerned in Germany. - 22 September 2026 · Hello, DefenderPRS and Mayer unveiled the collection. With that dispute fresh in guitar fans’ minds, the badge practically invited a second reading.
The official story starts in a garage
PRS says Mayer has owned an Arles Blue Defender for nearly 20 years and wanted to bring those automotive colours to his guitars. Contrasting black or white vehicle roofs also helped inspire the choice of plastic parts. [The collaboration’s backstory]
Most of us buy a strap to match the guitar. Mayer already had a matching car in the garage. Same instinct; slightly different accessories budget.
That longstanding enthusiasm gives the collaboration a perfectly plausible starting point. Nothing in the announcement establishes it as a hurried response to the dispute. Still, once you have seen “De-Fender”, it is remarkably difficult to unsee.
Meanwhile, the colours are doing their job
The US-made guitars draw on classic Defender colours; the SE models take their cues from modern Defenders. The SE also introduces black pickguards and black control knobs to the Silver Sky family. A small change with a surprisingly big visual effect.

Specifications: US-made Silver Sky · SE Silver Sky. The SE dates are PRS’s stated order window; local dealer deadlines and delivery dates may differ.
The white pickguards keep things classic; the black SE pickguards give the colours a tougher edge. You can spend hours debating the message, then settle the entire matter with “I’ll have the green one”.
Give your ears a turn
This official PRS Silver Sky demo offers a listen to the underlying model. It is an existing Silver Sky performance video, rather than a launch film for the Defender colours.
A cheeky dig, or excellent timing?
On the record, it is a colour collaboration rooted in Mayer’s love of cars. In the comments, it is a gift to anyone who enjoys guitar industry drama. Both things can be true.
Intentional dig? Unproven.
A name guitar fans were always going to enjoy?
Absolutely.
PRS announced eight colours. Fans added one hyphen. It might be the cheapest guitar modification to make this much noise all year.
