Really, when you think Black Sabbath you immediately think “Electric Guitar”. His early signature sound was the result of an always on treble-booster plugged into cranked Laney Supergroup amps. This approach to guitar is extremely rewarding and fun, but lost in this day and age because honestly who can really get away with the stage volume anymore? Far and few between! We designed the Sabbra Cadabra to give players that sonic experience, re-contextualised for today’s approach where players tend to use amps solely within their clean range at more mortal volume levels.

The Sabbra Cadabra is a custom-tuned Rangemaster-based booster combined with the pre-amp section of a Laney Supergroup. The two circuits are carefully voiced together to achieve the riffs of doom tone that Tony Iommi is so well known for. Four controls (RANGE, GAIN, PRESENCE, and VOL 4) allow you to fine-tune the response to your guitar and rig. If you’re familiar with Sabbath’s live album, ‘Past Lives’, then you’ll understand where we were going with this pedal - huge, raw, responsive!

The Sabbra Cadabra’s circuit is optimised for drop-tuning but works equally well for standard tuning thanks to the RANGE control, which allows you to “customise” the treble-booster section of the circuit and adjust it anywhere from treble-boost to full-range boost.

According to Mr. Iommi, someone modded his Dallas Rangemaster. “I don't know what he did to it, but it was really good. I used that treble booster on all the early Sabbath albums and put it into the Laney because it boosted the input and gave it the overdrive I was looking for, which amps in the early days didn't have.” Then in 1979 another tech threw it into the garbage, thinking it was crap. Can you believe that?! So no one really knows what was done to it. But based on our experience, it was most likely changing it to be more of a full-range boost and possibly re-biasing it. That’s what we mean when we say you can “customise” the treble-boost section with the RANGE knob - you can continuously adjust it to any input frequency response and feel that you want.

MODEL

SABBRA CADABRA

Power Source

9-18V DC power supply (sold separately)

Power Usage

5mA

Height

1.29"

Width

2.44"

Depth

4.48"

Weight

.40 lbs.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1764/4443/products/catalinbread-sabbra-cadabra-treble-boost-overdrive-pedal-cb-sabbracadabra-gsus4-565765.jpg?v=1738758560
catalinbread-naga-viper
Catalinbread | Naga Viper MK1 | Treble Booster Pedal

The Catalinbread Naga Viper is Catalinbread's take on the classic Dallas Rangemaster Treble Booster with added features allowing users to dial it in with any amplifier.

The Naga Viper is a booster that lives in the grand old tradition of the Dallas Rangemaster “Treble-Booster”. The original Rangemaster has been used by many influential British guitarists including Tony Iommi, Brian May, Marc Bolan, and KK Downing and Glen Tipton of Judas Priest. These guitarists, while completely unique in their styles, share the Rangemaster as the secret of boosting their cranked British tube amps into a juicy, harmonic-laden rock tone that always cuts through the mix and is ultimately proto-metal. The Naga Viper is hommage to this famous circuit. Beyond it’s basic tuning, the Naga enhances the classic circuit with the addition of two extra controls – Range and Heat. The original Rangemaster had just one control – Boost which everybody dimed anyway but essentially controlled the output volume. Our RANGE knob is a continuous control which allows you to go from classic treble-boost to a full-range boost and anywhere in-between – as the original could only function as a set frequency “treble-booster”. The HEAT knob gives you control over the gain level saturation, unlike the original which was fixed at maximum gain.

Power Source

9-18V DC power supply (sold separately)

Power Usage

1mA

Height

1.96"

Width

2.36"

Depth

4.33"

Weight

.40 lbs / .18 kgs

Batteries

9V

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1764/4443/products/catalinbread-naga-viper-mk1-treble-booster-pedal-cb-naga-viper-gsus4-988891.jpg?v=1738758560
catalinbread-topanga
Catalinbread | Topanga | Spring Reverb Pedal

Big wet and splashy.
60's outboard spring reverb tank.

"Surf guitarist's wet dream."
- Tone Report Magazine

The outboard Fender 6G15 spring reverb unit is the sound of Surf guitar, Spaghetti Western and many other great guitar sounds from the sixties. Part of its magic, and how it differs from the internal spring reverb found in most Fender-style amps, is that it is run *in front* of the amp, causing the reverb signal to distort and sound more intense. Because there were additional knobs on the outboard units, you also have more control over the reverb qualities. The Dwell knob controlled how hard the springs were getting hit by the guitar signal. The Tone knob allowed the treble to be dialed back to just the right degree of brightness. It was also essentially a tube preamp, so it would colour the sound going into the amp. All this added up to a very distinctive reverb sound with a lot of attitude and complex non-linearities that are hard to replicate. But we here at Catalinbread did just that! Besides giving you the classic three knob control compliment of the original, we’ve also added a great discrete preamp that you can control via the Volume knob for a healthy amount of great clean boost when you want it.

Power Source

9-18V DC power supply (sold separately)

Power Usage

64mA

Height

1.96"

Width

2.36"

Depth

4.33"

Weight

.40 lbs.

Features

Internal bypass mode switch

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1764/4443/products/catalinbread-topanga-spring-reverb-pedal-cb-topanga-gsus4-755516.jpg?v=1738758559
catalinbread-echorec
Catalinbread | Echorec | Multi-Head Echo Delay | Based on Binson Echorec
The Binson Echorec was so cool Catalinbread wanted to bring it back - and bring it back right. Yes, even you, outlaw country fan, and you, person wearing indecipherable metal logo band shirt. You see, the Tribute is an all-analog circuit that combines an extremely expressive high-headroom drive engine with an obscenely powerful and flexible tone control. The back end of the Tribute pays—ahem—homage to one of our oldest designs, the VariOboost. This circuit gives you a supercharged one-band parametric EQ in lieu of a tone control for some serious studio-esque tone sculpting power. Playing rhythm? Dial in a low-mids grunt and boost that band for some fat chords. Playing leads? Flip that thing and inject some sparkle into your sound. Want to fake a cocked wah pedal to nail your cover of “Money for Nothing”? Want to simulate some Peter Green-esque out-of-phase pickups? Want your single-coils to sound like humbuckers? What about the other way around? Sure, why not? Want all of that and more? When the house lights dimmed, all you could see through the hazy darkness was the array of red pilot lights shining from a backline wall of Marshall stacks. It was the ultimate prelude to the impending rock. In the absence of your own personal wall of Marshalls and the necessary road crew required to lug them around, the Dirty Little Secret (DLS) is the perfect secret weapon in your tone arsenal. This is your “always on” pedal, designed to be the "foundation" of your pedalboard, transforming any amplifier into those raging British stacks. It forms the core of your guitar sound which you can enhance and embellish by adding boosters, fuzzes, filters, and other overdrives in front of it - just like you would in front of a real amp. This mode was voiced to really hone in on that elusive in-between "not quite clean, not quite dirty" response that old tube amps were so good at getting. And it was specifically voiced to make fuzz pedals sound great (especially two-transistor based fuzzes like the fuzz face). Plug a Strat into a Fuzz Face with the DLS in SB mode and you'll see what we mean! It's voice is deeper bass, and an emphasis on the lower midrange band (in contrast to the Super Lead mode's upper midrange emphasis) and sounds especially great with Fender style guitars.

Tone stack-The DLS is two pedals in one. While that’s technically true, some of the most venerable guitar gods relied on an old tape echo unit to help achieve their legendary tones. This unit is the Maestro Echoplex EP-3. While some guitarists made great use of its echo effect, others dragged one to every gig just for its magical preamp. This preamp circuit was wired always-on, and so even those using it as an echo effect received significant tonal enhancements from the preamp circuit as well. Everyone from Eddie Van Halen to East Bay Ray of the Dead Kennedys relied on the EP-3 preamp to take their sound to previously unreachable heights. And now you can also, with our Epoch Boost.

Around the shop, we refer to the Epoch Boost as a “mastering pedal,” because it sounds like your base tone, but sculpted to perfection by a mastering engineer. This is accomplished by employing the same internal circuitry as a real EP-3, from the NOS Orange Drop capacitors to the output mixer stage that acts as a rudimentary frequency selector---it’s all there. We’ve taken the liberty of kicking the internal voltage all the way up to 22 volts, just like the original unit, giving you unparalleled headroom and clarity. Inside, we’ve included a switchable hi-Z input buffer if you’d like to use the Epoch Boost as your only pedal (don’t worry, we won’t judge). The Boost control gives you just the EP-3 tone when rolled off, but adds up to 20dB of crystal-clear boost as you crank it. Its preamp section let a lot of low frequencies through but then it would encounter an output section (power tubes, output transformer, and speaker) that couldn’t handle all that low end, often resulting in a flubby response, especially if you turned the Volume up. In fact, if you look at the manual from an old 50s tweed, it advises you to “turn down the Volume should you experience any distortion”. Of course, a lot of guitarists ignored that advice and cranked it up anyway, much to Leo’s chagrin, and the sound of rock was born. The Formula No. 55 gives you that huge low-end response but was specifically voiced for touch-sensitive dynamics and a fat, but tight and punchy sound. You can play a palm-muted boogie-woogie rhythm pattern, for example, and if you don’t bear down too hard with your picking attack you’ll get a big chunky, woody sound, the kind of sound that you’d think would flub out if you suddenly started strumming harder. While almost all of them used a Rangemaster, the Hornby-Skewes version came stock with a silicon transistor for a more biting sound that cut through even the densest of mixes. The SKEWER stays true to that circuit, giving the old JHS unit the same treatment as our Naga Viper. This lets you dial in the desired frequency range from rich and full to treble-heavy, as well as control the amount of boost. You can also vary the amount of transistor gain for some extra juice. Of course, because it’s Blackmore we’re talking about here, he had his original Treble Booster modded to play nicer with the rest of his gear. We’ve taken the liberty of giving you that mod as well, which is fully adjustable via the trimpot inside. Further enhancements include a noise reduction filter and anti-pop switch circuitry. This is not meant to make you sound like Blackmore, it is meant to inspire you from using the tools that he did, that would otherwise be inaccessible in pedal form.

The heart and soul of the Dreamcoat is a near-exact recreation of the preamp circuit from the Aiwa TP-1011 reel-to-reel deck that Blackmore used on many of his recordings. All of the functionality of that unit is present, from sparkling cleans to powerful crunch and glassy leads, but the “Sat” control gives you an extra layer of grunt, allowing the Dreamcoat to range between near-dry tonal indifference to complete “melting-amp” Neil Young-esque tweed sounds. Blackmore’s sound wasn’t just a tape deck, though. His guitar tech, Dawk Stillwell, installed a passive inductor-based frequency “booster” into Ritchie’s Strat that cut both sides of the spectrum around the resonant frequency of his guitar, giving the appearance of frequency boost. To that end, we’ve added a frequency booster circuit that doesn’t cut anything, giving you a richer tone with a little oomph where it counts.

To top it all off, we’ve included a clean blend circuit that begins after the frequency boost and ends after the tape preamp, so you can EQ the sum of your clean tone and dirt, all while preserving your pick attack and presence. The whole shebang runs at 20V, just a hair higher than the original Aiwa, expanding its capabilities and delivering tons of headroom.

FREQ: This controls the amount of boost at a specified frequency band, from 2.4KHz to 5KHz, which you set with the internal trimmer. When the knob is fully counter-clockwise, it’s out of the circuit. When you turn it up all the way, you’ll get a full 10dB boost at the selected frequency. Warning: a little goes a long way with this control, as ~4KHz is where pink noise and other unpleasantries live.

BLEND: This control blends the signal coming out of the Freq control with the Aiwa deck circuit. When all the way down, make sure you turn your master up to compensate and
vice-versa. When your Sat and Mic Vol are cranked and your Blend is just above 0, the resulting dynamic between your dry signal and those more extreme splatty Dreamcoat settings create a truly unique tone.

SAT: Controls the amount of feedback present in the first stage of the Aiwa unit. While you may not play the man’s actual guitar (seriously, props if you do), you may want to spend some time dialing this in. This is definitely a “set-it/forget-it” type of control, as you dial it to suit your guitar best. Of course, you can experiment with different frequencies and let the FREQ knob do the talking.

The Dreamcoat requires a 9V power supply center-negative and draws 44mA. One thing that made this circuit such an anomaly in effects canon was its lack of foot control; the Rangemaster was an amp-top device with a teeny-tiny toggle switch that was an absolute pain to disengage mid-riff. Of course, back in 1966 when it was invented, “pedals” as we know them today didn’t exist yet. For those players, their rig consisted of amp, Rangemaster and guitar.

All of these players found that the Rangemaster really came to life when it fed an already cranked amp, and indeed, the sound of Rangemaster-into-redlined-amp is instantly recognizable to its devotees.

In today’s modern landscape though, things aren’t always nearly that simple. Some players run any combination of effects into their amp, with some players having multiple “always-on” pedals careening into the treble booster. Now equipped with a foot-operated bypass switch, the humble treble booster may still hit a cranked amp but oftentimes it does so with the backing of multiple gain devices feeding it. For some players, this works. For many, this arrangement loses sight of what a treble booster actually does and what it adds to a rig.

The newest version of our Naga Viper fixes this problem by adding an attenuator knob. This control acts like a level control for everything in front of the Naga Viper, letting you shave some heat from the incoming signal before it runs through the proverbial gears of the booster. This leads to less saturation and undesirable effects and more treble-boosting goodness going into your amp.

The transistor in the Naga Viper has also been replaced and the circuit tastefully reworked to accommodate players of all stripes. Some players will leave the Attenuate control all the way up, and this design choice is for them. By swapping out the transistor, the Naga Viper is even hotter than before, with extended ranges for both Heat and Boost controls. Diming both controls now gives a slight edge compared to V1, opening up the range of the attenuator as well.

Though the actual production number of the Rangemaster is unknown, the general consensus is that not many were ever manufactured. While the majority of those released contained the same value for the boost potentiometer, some much rarer versions purportedly contained a different value that is said to make the tone hotter and a touch "gainier". We agree, and our newest version contains that uncommon value to extract a little "more" from this circuit.

None of the legendary Rangemaster players had many controls to work with, so we’ve reconfigured the circuit with that ethos in mind. Just like the original, the Bitters pairs just as well with synths, drum machines, and DAWs as it does with electric guitar and bass. And since the original didn’t have a mix control of any kind, the Bitters is infinitely more usable than the original ever was.The Bitters is essentially a multi-effects device on steroids, giving you individual knobs for distortion and phaser, along with a third user-selectable program called “Bitters.” This program can be one of four different effects: Decimator, Bitcrusher, Frequency Modulation, and Ring Modulation. These three effects are run in series, but you can reverse the order such that Bitters comes first for some complete sonic mayhem.

DISTORT: Imparts a tastefully appointed and harmonically-rich digital distortion whose gain increases as the knob is turned up. This new model features a Bias control that replicates the unique character of the original’s non-standard components, allowing for precise adjustments to its core gain and warmth without significantly increasing gain. Additionally, the novel Filter control combines the premier attributes of early and late EP-3 models, providing an advanced treble cut that ensures seamless integration with any setup. Explore the Epoch Bias and experience the ultimate expression of the effect that powered rock’s most memorable sounds.

The first solid-state Echoplex that was released found its way into innumerable recording studios, guitarists found themselves plugging into it to extract its wonderful preamp qualities right before hitting the amp. And staying true to that, our original Epoch Boost was billed as something of a “mastering tool”, the finishing touch for your tone. And while you are certainly free to place it anywhere you like, almost everyone, including the pros, preferred it at the end of the chain as an “always on” to tighten up the entire mix while adding some extra sparkle on top. It just made everything sound “good.” When it came time to head back to the drawing board, we thought of a couple extra variables you could use to craft your perfect EP-3 experience. We added a Bias control which gives you a little more gain and body from the stock circuit by simulating out-of-spec parts in the preamp core, so that every pedal is “one of the good ones.” We played with the “early” and “later” circuits and found the differences to be a bit too subtle, so we decided to add a well-curated filter knob to take you from early to later and beyond, a tasteful hi-cut that lets you adapt the pedal to your rig, not the other way around. The Preamp control lets you engage a gentle filtering circuit that simulates the Volume control from the original Echoplex, acting on the tone as the echo would have. The stock EP-3 circuit adds only a trivial amount of gain by itself, so we’ve included a Boost knob to wring as much gain from it as possible, giving you a real punch where you need it. It’s certainly our most tweakable EP-3 offering to date, with everything you want and nothing you don’t.

PREAMP: This essentially acts as the “Volume” knob from the EP-3, which is to say it’s not really a volume knob at all. That control was named such because it was the mix knob for the tape echo output, mixed with some of the “loading-down” of that echo side. At its core, it is a wet-dry mix control. But because there’s no echo here, the knob pans between “nothing” and the preamp. And when this knob is all the way down, that’s exactly what you hear: nothing. It sounds like a volume control until noon, and beyond that, it imparts some subtle frequency enhancement, on account of the loading simulation circuit. The loudest point on this knob is at about 2 o’clock.

BOOST: Adds extra gain and volume to the circuit. But because part tolerances were all over the place at the time of the EP-3’s release, there was quite a bit of variance in the overall gain in the preamp. This knob lets you dial that value in, to run the circuit hot or cold. Think of it as a gain control and a body enhancer. With its roots in that patch, the Catalinbread Soft Focus is intended to be an instant shoegaze button, while addressing the most glaring issues of the original unit: no mix control, a sub-par preamp, and a ghastly tone-sucking bypass signal. At its heart, the Soft Focus is a heavily modified plate reverb with adjustable time, which is subsequently split into three paths. One path contains a multi-voiced chorus modulator, another features a well-appointed octave-up mixed in with the reverb, and the third path leaves the reverb untouched. The Mod knob controls the rate of the chorus on path one, and the Symphony knob controls the level of the octave on path two. Originally, this involved an SSL console’s talkback mic channel fed back through the console preamp and into a noise gate

In the primordial ooze of studio tricks, many recording engineers had to invent their own effects. Double tracking and flanging started as manual manipulations of magnetic tape and the machinery used to process it. One such effect is gated reverb, the combination of digital reverb and noise gate, “invented” in the ‘70s but popularized in the ‘80s by one Phil Collins. Like many now-legendary effects, gated reverb was invented by accident using the Solid State Logic SL4000 Talkback Mic channel and AMS RMX16 digital reverb units. The premise is simple enough: the gate is a function of the signal strength; once the signal level drops below an adjustable threshold, the reverb tail snaps shut. Our CBX recreates this magical symbiosis with an overdrivable preamp, adjustable reverb lag time and a full wet-dry blend. The result is a lovely and expressive “always-on” reverb that stays in its lane and won’t interfere with the all-important mix.

Lag: This adjusts the delay between the original note played and the onset of the gate. WARNING: please see note in “Effect Order” section below.

BOOST VOL: The boost circuit is actually one of the tube emulation building blocks that make up the DLS itself. When you run the boost before the Dirty Little Secret, it acts as another “preamp tube” added to the front end of the device for some saturated JCM900 tones. When run after, it makes everything louder without sacrificing clarity. This knob is a volume control for the Boost side, so at lower points in the knob’s turn, the boost signal can get below unity gain. This helps you dial in maximum tone shaping for combining the two effects.

TREBLE/MIDDLE/BASS: These are the classic Marshall amp tone stack values that we all know and love, highly interactive as always. These values are taken directly from the amps themselves, and the entire tonestack circuit is passive, meaning that noon is not flat on either knob. The Bass control in particular isn’t flat at noon, and most players of actual Plexi amps keep this control pretty low. When switching between modes, the TMB tonestack values are swapped as well, lending complimentary toneshaping to each.

SL/SB TOGGLE: The most requested mod in the history of Catalinbread has arrived; a toggle to switch between both modes. Impossible in the original due to space and function constraints, this allows you to switch between Super Lead mode, a cutting, upper-midrange-heavy tone, and Super Bass mode, a smoother, smokier tone with a lower midrange emphasis.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1764/4443/files/catalinbread-dirty-little-secret-deluxe-marshall-in-a-box-catalinbread-dls-dlx-gsus4-471532.jpg?v=1738757377
catalinbread-tremolo-8
Catalinbread | Tremolo 8 | Tremolo & Reverb Pedal w/ 8 Programs

With 8 unique programs, the Tremolo8 shows you what volume modulation is truly capable of.
In a past life, this project started as a pedal for our personal enjoyment; a digitized model of the Fender Showman’s "harmonic vibrato". The experiment was a resounding success, so we started experimenting with more LFOs and more tremolo styles. We really like the sound of tremolo splashing against a reverb like Magnatones or Vibro Champs and our previous work on the Topanga Burnside reflects this. At the same time, we are suckers for bigger ethereal reverbs so we decided to add some trem-specific reverb algorithms and a subtle tone control. After researching and implementing them to exhaustion, we discovered that not all LFOs are created equal and some are much more equal than others. A sawtooth LFO leads to wild reverse-esque sonic manipulation and a fluttery compressed sound when set low. A square wave with a duty cycle control ("on" time) leads to a thumping, stuttering reverb sound, so why not turbocharge the square wave to a few kilohertz and churn out some wacky sum and difference frequencies? In a completely different program, trem modulation with chorus floating on top sounded too good to leave out. When working on the Many Worlds we had so much fun with the envelope-controlled phase angle that we wanted something like that in here, so we crafted an envelope-controlled trem rate with adjustable sensitivity and attack/decay, leading to head-spinning effects when letting chords ring out or when cranking some touch-sensitive solos.

RATE: Controls the speed of the trem.
